East New Britain Sexual Health Improvement Project

Under the Papua New Guinea – Australia Sexual Health Improvement Program (PASHIP), the Burnet Institute established the East New Britain Sexual Health Improvement Program (ENBSHIP) which implemented, supported and delivered activities that increased awareness about sexually transmitted infections (STI), improved and strengthened access to health services for STI and supported the stronger provision of these services at the provincial health and district levels within East New Britain (ENB).

The program supported existing government, church and private health providers to provide the effective delivery of STI prevention and treatment services in accordance with national guidelines.

2007 - 2012

Technical partners for the program included the International Women’s Development Agency (IWDA) and the Cairns Sexual Health Centre, and the counterpart agency was the East New Britain Provincial Health Office.

Training was provided on a broad range of issues including: human resource management, planning and budgeting, data collection and analysis, strengthening of clinical skills and laboratory skills. The project also engaged non-government, community and faith based organisations to expand and strengthen community response to STI through awareness raising, care seeking and healthy sexual behaviours.
