Background

Jake has a background in social psychology and public health, having completed a Master of Applied Science with the Australian Research Centre of Sex, Health & Society (ARCSHS) at La Trobe University in 2021. He has also completed a Graduate Diploma in Psychology and Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) with the Australian Catholic University.

Jake's key research interests include LGBTIQ+ identity and community; Gay, Bisexual, and Queer-identifying (GBQ) men's subcultures; sexual health; and culturally-appropriate health promotion.

During his Master's degree, Jake conducted a foundational qualitative exploration of subcultural identities of gay, bisexual, and queer-identifying men in Australia. The aim of the research was to understand how subcultural identities are characterised, adopted, and expressed by those who utilise them; the findings of which now inform Jake's PhD research.

Jake commenced his PhD with Burnet and Monash University in 2022; exploring health, risk, and protective factors associated with subcultural identities (such as HIV risk and PrEP use) among GBQ men in Australia.

Jake has previously assisted with multiple ARCSHS research projects and taught within the School of Psychology and Public Health at La Trobe University. Jake has utilised both quantitative and qualitative research methods and is comfortable sharing knowledge with a variety of stakeholders, teaching, student mentorship, and public presenting.
