Abstract

Highlights

  • Adolescent girls follow pathways to pregnancy that occur within or outside union.
  • Within-union pathways stemmed from peer-led, parent-led, or arranged unions.
  • An outside-union pathway stemmed from romantic relationships and unprotected sex.
  • Social norms, poverty, and lack of SRH information and services were key drivers.
  • Program and policy responses should be aligned to girls' pathways.
