C the difference: exploring the learning strategies used by hepatology nurses in the era of new hepatitis C treatments.

Abstract

The hepatology nurse's role is evolving alongside the implementation of the new direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) in hepatitis C virus (HCV) management. This study was conducted in Australia in 2012–2013 to explore the strategies used by hepatology nurses to incorporate new evidence into practice, using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The results indicated that although Australian hepatology nurses were confident in conducting literature searches, they relied on informal knowledge-sharing with senior colleagues, which was not critiqued for potential bias. Preference for pre-digested information rather than the original research was frequently described, because it was easier to implement in practice. The results highlight the need for hepatology nurses to enhance their clinical decision-making by reflecting on their learning needs, and developing the skills and confidence to critically appraise research.
