Altered States: An evaluation of VAC drug and alcohol services

The gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) community is at higher risk of mental health issues and substance misuse compared to other members of the community.

In 2012 the Victorian AIDS Council began a pilot therapeutic program targeted at members of the GLBT community experiencing issues with substance use and poor mental health.

This program is now ongoing and the Burnet Institute is responsible for the evaluation of this program, including client and staff satisfaction, program content and therapeutic changes over time.

There are currently a number of different programs in operation which fall under the ‘Altered States’ evaluation, including Rewired- for those experiencing methamphetamine use and low mood, and Over The Limit, for those experiencing issues with alcohol misuse and anxiety.
