The world’s largest HIV and AIDS conference is coming to Melbourne in 2014 with Burnet’s Co-head of the Centre for Virology, Professor Sharon Lewin named Local Chair.

The International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2014) is held every two years and attracts 25,000 of the world’s leading scientists, healthcare providers, journalists and political, community and business leaders.

International Conference Chair for AIDS 2014 and Nobel Laureate Professor Françoise Barré-Sinoussi said experts from Asia and the Pacific will have a unique perspective on the HIV epidemic.

“Hosting AIDS 2014 in Melbourne will make it possible for these experts to attend the conference and share their successes and challenges on a global level,” Professor Barré-Sinoussi said.

Professor Lewin said Australia has been a global leader in improving diagnosis treatment and prevention of HIV and AIDS since the early 1980s.

“The Australian health policy response to HIV has been characterised as emerging from the grassroots rather than top-down, with a high degree of partnership between scientists, government and community,” Professor Lewin said.

“AIDS 2014 will be a great opportunity to share the benefits of such partnerships with other countries. It will also present new research an influence key policy makers to increase commitment and action based on evidence.”

Burnet Institute Director and CEO Professor Brendan Crabb said although incredible progress has been made in the past few decades, HIV continues to have a devastating effect on the world, impacting tens of millions of the world’s poorest people.

“This major international congress is a huge recognition of the quality of Australian science. It will shed a global spotlight on the latest discoveries in HIV, some of them made right here at Burnet, that promise to help alleviate this terrible human suffering,” Professor Crabb said.

AIDS 2014 will be held in July at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.
