Burnet Institute would like to offer its sincerest condolences to the people of China’s eastern Jiangsu Province, devastated by a powerful tornado on Thursday.

China state media reports that up to 78 people were killed when the tornado, bearing winds of up to 125 km per hour and accompanied by hail and thunderstorms, hit the city of Yangchen.

There were widespread power outages, road blockages and damage to buildings.

Burnet has a close relationship with Jiangsu Province through the Nanjing BioPoint Diagnostics Laboratory, commissioned in May 2015 to undertake research and development of novel diagnostic tools in areas of unmet medical need.

Jiangsu Province also has a longstanding Sister State Relationship with Victoria providing a strong platform for commercial, cultural, educational and government-to-government relations.
