Warmest congratulations to Burnet Institute Patron Mrs Maria Myers and her husband, Melbourne barrister Allan Myers QC, both of whom were named Companions in the Order of Australia (AC) in the 2016 Australia Day Honours.

The honours were awarded for their philanthropy in the performing and visual arts and contributions to higher education, medical research and the law.

Mrs Myers has a longstanding relationship with Burnet as a director of the Institute from 2004-2011.

A businesswoman, philanthropist and former social worker, Mrs Myers has been a strong supporter and advocate of Burnet’s work for many years, with special interests in the area of international and indigenous health, education and social justice.

She has twice visited Burnet’s Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies program in Papua New Guinea, including the official launch of the program in Kokopo, East New Britain in June last year.

Mrs Myers is a Director of the Dunkeld Pastoral Company and Australian String Quartet, and Chairman of the Kimberley Foundation, Australia.

She is also a member of the State Library of Victoria Foundation Council, Loreto College Ballarat School Council, and a member of St Mary’s College Council, University of Melbourne.

The Myers are generous, longstanding and committed supporters of the National Gallery of Victoria.

Mr Myers is a former president of the NGV’s board of trustees, current head of the council at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra, and owner of the renowned Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld in rural Victoria.
