World-leading infectious disease modeller, Professor David Wilson has joined Burnet Institute heading up a team that will work across the Institute’s three centres.

Head of the Centre for Population Health, Professor Margaret Hellard said Professor Wilson and his team’s modelling work would value-add across the Institute.

“David is working towards solving really complex problems globally and will be able to support our projects through his models, but we can also use our research to inform his work,” Professor Hellard said.

“We are really looking forward to collaborating with David and his team.”

Professor Wilson said he was inspired by the extent of Burnet’s work and is excited to join the Institute.

“What we do is gather data together and look at the logical implications of the epidemic looking at the implementation of programs and marry them together to what is the most cost effective for government to reach their targets,” he said.

Professor Wilson completed his PhD on infectious disease modelling in 2003, studying at Queensland University of Technology as well as at Oxford University and ETH Switzerland.

He then completed a postdoctoral fellowship at University of California on HIV epidemic modelling and optimal allocation of HIV antiretroviral drugs, informing World Health Organization guidelines and policy and practice for treatment rollout in sub-Saharan Africa.

He leads the UNSW and World Bank Optima team, which conducts modelling, health economic and resource allocation studies for governments as well as regional and global health agencies and international donors.

He was the winner of a Eureka Prize in 2013 and the Royal Society of NSW’s Edgeworth David Medal in 2014.

Professor Wilson will have team members in Melbourne, Sydney, London, Kuala Lumpur, the Netherlands, Denmark and USA and will himself be in Melbourne four times a year for two weeks at a time.
