Day of Immunology Tour

McKinnon Secondary College teacher Mark Drummond enjoyed the chance to tour the labs with some of the VCE biology students.

Members of the public and McKinnon Secondary College VCE students enjoyed a rare opportunity to take a close look behind the scenes, and hear about the latest immunological research at Burnet’s annual Day of Immunology Discovery Tour.

Several of Burnet’s young scientists talked about their research into new vaccines and treatments against infectious diseases, and understanding the role played by the immune system.

Presenters included Dr Sarah Charnaud on Winning The Race Against Malaria Elimination; Tom Angelovich – HIV Infection And Healthy Ageing: Possibly Not So Different; Xi Zen Yap – Back To Basics: Improving Malaria Vaccines With Immunology and Ben Fanke on dendritic cells.

Afterwards, the guests were treated to a tour of Burnet’s laboratories where they were able to observe tissue culture through light microscopes; a demonstration of how liquid nitrogen is used to preserve blood, tissue and other biological samples; and live cell imaging of malaria parasites invading human red blood cells.
