Professor James Beeson presents to Burnet's 'Working Towards Malaria Elimination' symposium

The quest to eliminate malaria from our region, and globally, was the theme of Friday’s symposium ‘Working Towards Malaria Elimination’ hosted by Burnet Institute on the eve of World Malaria Day.

Burnet researchers featured prominently in an interesting and varied program attended by almost 200 students and malaria research scientists at the Alfred Medical Research and Education Precinct Theatre.

The symposium showcased current research, progress and priorities in developing malaria vaccines, drug resistance, identification of new antimalarials, epidemiology and other issues affecting elimination.

Among the highlights were Burnet’s Dr Freya Fowkes’ address, ‘Malaria Drug Resistance: History repeating itself?’ and Professor James Beeson’s, ‘Vaccines for malaria elimination’.

Burnet laboratory head, Dr Paul Gilson unveiled his latest groundbreaking video production showing malaria parasites invading red blood cells in real time as part of his presentation, ‘Informing malaria vaccine development through high resolution imaging of parasites’.

The program concluded with a Q&A Session featuring panellists Associate Professor Julie Simpson, Professor Stephen Rogerson and Professor Graham Brown from the University of Melbourne, Monash University’s Associate Professor Jose Garcia-Bustos, and Burnet’s Dr Fowkes.
