Burnet welcomes two new Directors

Burnet Institute welcomes the appointment of two new directors to its Board – former Burnet HIV researcher and now Director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, Professor Sharon Lewin, and former Senator and WA State Parliamentarian, Ms Louise Pratt.

“We are very pleased that Professor Sharon Lewin and Ms Louise Pratt have joined the Board and I know they will greatly contribute to the future strategic direction of the Institute,” Acting Chairman of the Burnet Board, Mr Robert Milne said.

Professor Sharon Lewin, FRACP, PhD

Professor Lewin is an infectious diseases physician and basic scientist. She is the inaugural Director of the Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity at the University of Melbourne; consultant physician at The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, and an Australian National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Practitioner Fellow. She was the local co-chair of the XXth International AIDS Conference (AIDS2014) in Melbourne.

The former Co-Head of Burnet’s Centre for Biomedical Research, Professor Lewin’s laboratory research focuses on strategies to cure HIV infection and the pathogenesis of HIV-hepatitis B co-infection.

Ms Louise Pratt, BA

A former Senator for Western Australia (2008-2014) and Parliamentarian in the Western Australian State Parliament (2001-2007), Ms Pratt also served as Shadow Parliamentary Secretary for Environment, Climate Change & Water (2013-14) and as Deputy Chair of Committees (presiding over Parliament).

She is a committed social change advocate working to advance health, economic and social equality both in Australia and globally. Ms Pratt has played a leadership role at a number of global parliamentary forums on HIV, gender, climate change and population issues.

She has also been a leader within the national Parliament in relation to LGBTI and HIV/AIDS issues, serving as a Member of the Ministerial Advisory Committee for Blood Borne Viruses & STIs, Convener of Parliamentary Liaison Group for Blood Borne Viruses & STI’s, and representing Australia at a number of international forums and meetings including to the UN High Level Meeting on HIV/AIDS and the International AIDS Conference in Washington, 2012.
