Head of Burnet’s China Program, Lisa Renkin has received a prestigious Victorian Government Hamer Scholarship for an intensive Chinese language training course at Nanjing University.

Presented by Minister for Innovation, Services and Small Business, the Hon Louise Asher MP, the Hamer Scholarship was established in 2012 to recognise the value specialist language skills bring to the relationship between Victoria and its sister-state Jiangsu province.

Ms Renkin will relocate to Nanjing, the capital of Jiangsu, for a semester of intensive language training at Nanjing University in February.

“This is an amazing opportunity. I’m very grateful to both the Victorian Government and to Burnet for encouraging me to improve my Chinese language skills,” Ms Renkin said.

“I’m looking forward to the challenge!”

Ms Renkin will continue to play a leadership role in the Institute’s China program while based in Nanjing.

Burnet continues to expand its interests in Jiangsu, including collaborations with the National Centre for STDs, Nanjing University and the creation of Burnet’s research and development company, Nanjing BioPoint Diagnostic Technology Ltd.

“Being based in China also offers me the opportunity to spend more time with our program partners in Kunming, and in Beijing, so I’m very much looking forward to this time of residing in-country,” she said.
