Victorian charities get together to launch Include a Charity Week.

Burnet Institute is joining 140 Australian charities to raise awareness of the importance and effectiveness of leaving a charitable bequest during Include a Charity Week.

Nearly half of Australian don’t have a Will and of those who do, just 7.5 per cent will leave a gift to charity.

The charity consortium Include a Charity, hopes to increase the proportion of people who leave a charitable bequest to 12 per cent, which would make an additional $440 million available to charities to support their long-term work in medical research, education, welfare and care of the environment.

Burnet Institute Planned Giving Manager, Merrilyn Julian says almost all of us have the capacity to enhance the lives of others through a gift in our Will.

“Every bequest, however small or large, is gratefully received and makes a difference to Burnet’s capacity to understand, to respond and to act to improve the health of the world’s most disadvantaged people,” she says.

“The Institute is fortunate in having received bequests and notifications of future gifts from many people in all walks of life. It’s their generosity and foresight that allows us to plan for our long-term future with confidence.”

Ross Anderson from Include a Charity says he is delighted there is now a trend towards a consideration of charitable bequests.

“However, we want to communicate with the 80 per cent of Australians who don’t know this is an option. After making sure loved ones are taken care of, we are asking people to consider their favourite charity when making or next updating their Will,” Mr Anderson said.

Every gift in every Will makes a difference to the Burnet Institute - this week is Include a Charity Week. For a confidential discussion about your bequest ideas, please call Merrilyn Julian, Planned Giving Manager.
