Winners and top fundraisers of the Melbourne City Romp, 'Six of the Best'.
It was a clean sweep for Melbourne City Romp Team, ‘Six of the Best’, winning the event and also raising the most money for charity partner, the Burnet Institute.
Romping for the third time, Nik Daud and some of his ‘Six of the Best’ team mates are seasoned professionals, having participated in scavenger hunts in Malaysia when they were living there.
“When we saw the Romp advertised we were really interested, it sounded like a similar day out to what we used to do in Malaysia so we signed up,” Mr Daud said.
“It’s a great event and we really enjoy ourselves. Raising money for a good cause like this is hard work, but it’s not hard if you know what I mean.”
Mr Daud and his five team mates contacted neighbours, friends and colleagues to attain sponsorship for the Romp, raising $4289. They are well experienced with fundraising for Burnet – they were the top fundraisers at the 2010 event as well.
“We sent out emails and Facebook and just spoke to people face-to-face and got a good response. We only had three weeks but were already receiving donations before we could hand out receipts,” Mr Daud said.
“Most Australians are kind-hearted – it’s a good cause so people are generally willing to donate. It’s hard yakka, but if you don’t give up and keep plugging away you’ll get there.”
Burnet Institute Director and CEO, Professor Brendan Crabb said the money raised will go directly to towards the Institute’s malaria, TB and HIV programs.
“We would especially like to thank those teams who worked so hard in the lead up to the Romp by fundraising for us,” Professor Crabb said.
“It’s event like this that provide a great opportunity for Burnet to reach new supporters and also spread the message about the work we do.”
A very big thank you to ‘Team RedLove’ and ‘Black Milk Bandits’, who were the second and third top fundraisers, raising $2250 and $1110 respectively.
