A pneumonia of unknown cause detected in Wuhan, China was first reported to the World Health Organization (WHO) Country Office in China on 31 December 2019.

The outbreak was declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern on 30 January 2020. On 11 February 2020, WHO announced a name for the new coronavirus disease: COVID-19

Symptoms range from a mild cough to pneumonia. Some people recover easily, others may get very sick very quickly.

The Victorian State Government has provided AUD$6 million to Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity (Doherty Institute) and Burnet Institute expedite development of new therapeutics, diagnostics, clinical research and the public health response to the novel coronavirus, known as COVID-19.
