Tragically, more than 1500 mothers of newborns die in Papua New Guinea (PNG) each year.

However, with the right knowledge and interventions, most of these deaths could be prevented.

Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB) Principal Investigator, Dr Michelle Scoullar says that gathering evidence and knowledge is a crucial first step.

“With the right knowledge, we can understand what the problems are, what the needs in the community are, and then develop a really strong action plan. It’s like having a road map. Without it, you’re lost, but with it we can really make sure we know the way to make the biggest difference,” she said.

Dr Scoullar and her team urgently need your support so that we have the evidence to develop and implement the most effective interventions to save the lives of mothers and babies.

The Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies (HMHB) research project is four years in. HMHB is a collaborative research program aimed at providing life-saving health care for women and children in PNG and finding solutions to the needless loss of life.

We have made a strong start in gaining crucial new knowledge and educating communities. But we have much further to go.

You can help us to put a stop to these preventable deaths.

“With the right knowledge we can understand what the problems are, what the needs in the community are, and develop a really strong action plan."

Dr Michelle Scoullar, Principal Investigator, HMHB
