The Institute

At Burnet, we are helping to create the future of health, placing equity at the centre of what we do, and paying close attention to the effects of a rapidly changing climate and environment. We’re working for a future where diseases are eliminated, where mothers and children are thriving, where the world is better prepared for health challenges, and where those at risk are supported to reduce harms to their health.

What we do

We provide the next generation of lab-based researchers and public health + international development experts with opportunities to extend their skills and deepen their experience through our Honours, Masters and PhD programs. Students train with internationally recognised experts and gain valuable feedback in student-focussed seminars and symposia. Along the way, they also have exposure to our uniquely integrated workplace, and nurturing culture. Learn more about studying at Burnet.

We’re serious about delivering better health for all, and at pace. That’s why we work in integrated teams, maximising the connections between fieldworkers and lab researchers to make practical progress on three core ambitions: eliminating the threat of disease; preparing health systems and populations for future pandemics; and ensuring women, children, and young people have access to the health support they need. Learn more about our research.

We’re committed to supporting local teams in some of the world’s poorest, most remote and most challenging locations to protect the fundamental human right to good health in their communities. Our approach is always collaborative, sustainable and locally led, and we’re proud of our status as the only Australian medical research institute to hold international non-government organisation (NGO) accreditation. Burnet is home to an extraordinary cohort of thinkers and leaders, drawn to us because of our strength as an institution, our clear sense of purpose, and our willingness to do things differently. Across all areas of expertise, our team members are intently focused on equity and justice, deeply invested in the power of collaboration – and proud to be part of Burnet.
